After all, for all of her nerve and outspoken nature, she has never been good at making friends. But with her new servant Bridey at her side—and a darkly endearing stranger who joins them on the train—Fiona sets out to find her own life, all the while hoping to leave the spirits she has been seeing behind her.

Fiona finds the atmosphere of Wyndriven’s ancient abbey home daunting, despite her best efforts. For a girl who can see spirits, the monstrous building—with its long history and many secrets—also holds the lives of all those who have lived there. And died there.

To Fiona’s delight, she does make good friends with the other girls, as well as with the spirit of an attractive eighteenth-century gentleman, and the charming estate manager. However, Fiona finds herself tested as the deeper secrets and mysteries of Wyndriven surround her. Will she be able to help those who truly need her? What will become of their lives—and their souls—if she is unable to overpower the mysterious evil that refuses to die?

”We were just girls. Young, innocent girls. And something horrible, something unspeakable, had happened to us.”

GLORY, HALLELUJAH, THIS BOOK HAS FINALLY BEEN PUBLISHED!!!!!!!!

It’s such a shame that more people haven’t gotten into this wonderfully, deliciously creepy series. I assume this is why it took so long to get it published, and why it wasn’t done through a traditional publishing house. From a more vain perspective, I wish it was traditionally published so I could’ve gotten it in hardcover to match the other gorgeous books in the series. But no matter, because the book is now finally in my hands. And since reading it, I can tell you that it was well worth the wait.

Fiona O’Malley tries, but she can’t quite seem to become the proper young lady her grandmama wants her to be. Outspoken and opinionated in an era where those two qualities aren’t looked kindly on, Fiona retreats into the comfort of her books.

”I was fretted by the frightening picture of the wild-eyed, poetry-scribbling, specter-seeing recluse I might become if my lonely life remained undisturbed. Perhaps the siren’s call was simply my excuse to make another foray into the world.”

However, her grandmother thinks she’s found the perfect solution by sending her to the Wyndriven Female Academy. So off she goes to a strange new land with her loyal servant Bridey at her side. But a Northerner attending a school in the South isn’t looked kindly upon by many. Even worse if they find out that Fiona sees and talks to the dead. But when mysterious events start happening at Wyndriven, Fiona’s talents may be the one thing that can help the school from being destroyed.

Jane Nickerson’s writing is top-notch and atmospheric as ever. One of the reasons I love her books so much is the fact that her writing is so luscious and descriptive without ever crossing over into the land of purple prose. She has the perfect chance of showing off her writing skills when describing the ghosts and hauntings Fiona sees.

”The coldness comes—a chill that withers my skin and sucks all warmth from my body. The points of ice touch my flesh—they are pinching—and the breeze stirs my hair—they are snatching. I smell them—carbolic soap and beeswax, with an underlying stink of sweat and onions.”

The rot, stink, and decay come right through the pages with her writing.

Fiona is a very headstrong, likable character. Socially awkward and never food at making friends, she has a hard time at first when she arrives at the school. Despite being mean to her in the beginning, Fiona refuses to retaliate in the like. But she and her peers are mature enough to see past their differences and become fast friends. I loved their dynamics together and how badass they were in a time where badassery in girls wasn’t accepted. But they didn’t give a flying fuck, and for that I’m glad. The author hints at the various secrets each of the girls has, and she drops delicious little morsels here and there, but she never comes outright and reveals them.

”We had gone through pain and grief and fear together. We were fast friends, but we all had our mysteries.”

I do wish that we had gotten explanations of what those were in the end, since it kind of bugged me.

And of course, we couldn’t have a Southern Gothic ghost story without a requisite ghost romance. In Fiona’s room lives the man who originally owned Wyndriven Abbey. They become fast friends with the hint of becoming something more… except for the fact that he’s a ghost.

”Continually I reminded myself that Leo’s companionship and humor were dead companionship and humor, the lips that smiled had been dust for a hundred years.”

Poor Fiona; the first time she receives romantic attention from a man, it’s going well, and then she discovers he’s a ghost. It was a very sweet romance, and I sure wish he could have been real for Fiona’s sake. Furthermore, for those of you worried that their romance takes anything away from the plot, it doesn’t. They actually make a really good detective team working together to figure out the various hauntings of the Abbey.

For those of you wondering, each of the books can be technically read as a standalone, though they take place in the same universe. HOWEVER, if we aren’t getting technical, you should definitely read the first book before reading this final book. There’s a main character from the first book that plays a substantial role in this installment (as well as a family that made an appearance), so I would strongly suggest reading the first book so you won’t be terribly lost. And for those of you who have already read the first book, be rest assured that this character’s appearance is a welcome, if creepy, surprise.

As the series comes to a close, it’ll be a sad goodbye for Wyndriven Abbey. My favorite is by far the first book, with this being a close second (the second book was my least favorite). However, it’ll be a real joy to revisit Jane Nickerson’s lush writing, her tantalizing version of the old South, and her headstrong females. For fans of The Beguiled and Picnic at Hanging Rock, this book will delight both fans just starting this series and those who have waited literal years for this book to come out.
