    Donna Davis

I fit in, yet didn’t fit in to Cosby’s target audience, in that I am a white parent with one African-American child (and others scattered amongst the family tree). I have spent most of my adult life as a teacher in schools with large numbers of African-American and other students of color, and there’s a chapter for teachers, too.

Cosby took a lot of flak for this, and I feel it was undeserved. There were a few missteps, perhaps, but most of those who lashed out at him were too young to understand

Cosby took a lot of flak for this, and I feel it was undeserved. There were a few missteps, perhaps, but most of those who lashed out at him were too young to understand that if anybody in the Black community has earned the right to speak up, it is he. Cosby was the first actor on television in a series, and it wasn’t like the movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, where the entire issue is that a Caucasian girl has brought a Black date home to meet the folks, but rather a series where a central character just happens to be Black. He used his newly established fame to put on one-time variety specials in which all the talent hired for large-scale song and dance numbers were people of color. He did everything within his power to open the door to the entertainment world to other African-American performers.

Cosby revolutionized how people of color are portrayed on television. The Cosby Show was initially going to feature his television family as working class, some sort of menial labor, which Cosby saw as stereotyping. He took the series only once he was permitted to rewrite the family into the middle class.

But back to the book.Cosby’s main thesis, which is that African-American families need to take their kids in hand, stop dropping kids all over the place (in far too many cases) with Baby-Mamas, and give African-American children a respectable male and female role model and a sense of structure and discipline, is not a bad idea. I have seen many situations where the parents were ready to look everywhere for the source of their kids’ woes, except at home, and in the mirror. I don’t say this to disparage Black culture, any more than Cosby did. But when a sub-culture forms that says young Black men should not read books because that is a betrayal of their ethnicity, then someone with credentials and stature should speak up, and I am glad that Mr. Cosby had the courage to do so.

Does racism still exist, and is it still a problem? I know it is. I have seen the way the occasional restaurant host regards me, and then I watch his face change when he sees my son. My son is a college student. Yes, he dresses in the hip hop style. But I have seen assumptions made about my own child that had to be based on his race and/or style of dress, because they were meeting him for the first time, and the Wall of Fear was already up (and this for a young man who stands five feet four). Racism exists, it still needs to be confronted and challenged, but it should not be an excuse for parents of nonwhite children to not set boundaries within the home, to instead leave the whole blame on others because it is the easiest thing to do.

Kudos go to Bill Cosby, both for his historical role in opening the door to African-Americans in respectable roles on television, and in having the courage of his convictions to say the unpopular thing that needed saying. Despite the tragedy he has experienced in his own life, he is still reaching out to help others, and he deserves a round of applause.
