I will confess right off the bat that I haven’t listened Howard Stern’s broadcasts during my 34 years on this planet. It is partly explained by not being an American, but also by that I haven’t felt any desire to check out those awesome Youtube collections that gathers all the glorious media history for the late bloomers such as me. I haven’t watched any TV-shows from Stern either, but I have devoured the movie version of Private Parts in the late 90’s, which really makes it quite impossible to
Never before has a man done so much with so little.
Despite the lack of my knowledge and experience, I had an idea of this shocking, raunchy, outspoken, politically incorrect, rude, humorous but truthful individual that made an changing and lasting impact to broadcasting’s future.
I was right.
Howard Stern was a breath of fresh air, an original individual that changed the world of disc jockeys. Radio was not just for playing records with clean cut commentary between the hit songs, it was something completely new. It was engaging, outrageous, entertaining and very much sexual. Nothing was sacred, there was lines crossed in a daily basis, something that gained the love of millions, but most certainly got the “concerned and offended” on their toes with their ridiculous demands, too. Now, I have heard rumors that Stern has tamed quite a bit from his glory years, but I still want to believe he has kept his spirit and attitude when comes to current events of the world.
Private Parts was written in the early 90’s, which naturally makes it quite outdated when comes to the life of Howard Stern, but it is still an fabulous look at the broadcasting industry and Stern’s early life to his star years with his broadcasting team, to a time when he was on top of his shit.
The format of this book is pretty simple. Private Parts has been written with the same raunchy style Stern was known to deliver on the radio. It is a lot of laughs, a lot of head shakes, a lot of straight out from the cutter information that keeps your nights entertained. Sex, lesbians, boobs, sex, lesbians and boobs. And also a lot of things that would not fly today due to world changing and “offending and unlimited” humor dying with it, unfortunately.
I especially liked how there was a lot of commentary added from other individuals, from Stern’s co-workers to his family, but I would not recommend the edition I read as the quality of printing (all the photos and other extra material that fill many pages) is lousy at its best. At over 600 pages, it might be too much of Howard Stern and his style, but the breaks between made it more tolerable and less yawning.
In other words, pretty good job from a guy who doesn’t, or at least did not, read books.
